The Mattawoman Creek estuary.

This is the last of Maryland's freshwater-tidal estuaries on the Potomac to retain outstanding qualities in the face of increasing urbanization around Washington D.C.

The Potomac River is visible at the top of the picture.

The estuary is fed by a 20 mile long river that collects water from a 94 square mile watershed.

Here, an ancient Lyre-leaf Oak anchors the bank, and witnesses River Herring swim by each spring as they visit from their home in the Atlantic Ocean to spawn.
